Doris Weiselein grew up as part of a Cree & Metis community in Northern Manitoba, where she learned beadwork and leatherwork from her Grandma. She has lived in the Comox Valley for 62 years where she has raised 5 children and taught beadwork for the last thirty years. She has been instrumental in many social programs in the valley and has received the recognition of being named a City Freeman.(an honour bestowed on citizens who are seen to have given service of great value to their community in a voluntary capacity) She is current president of the Indigenous Women’s Sharing Society, which is responsible for the “Program of the Unbroken Chain”. It provides support to individuals impacted by the overdose crisis, including people with lived and living experience, family and friends and youth, and those who are at risk of homelessness and are experiencing homelessness.
