Biography: Anna Heywood-Jones is an artist, educator, and mother. She has been working with plant-based colour for over 20 years, and her work includes the creation of Tinctorial Cartographies, a research project archiving botanical colour growing across Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia). As an artist-in-residence and project leader with the EartHand Gleaners Society (Vancouver), Anna researched the interactions between locally grown fibres (linen, nettle & wool) and the spectrum of dye plants growing in EGS’s urban garden sites (Vancouver). Through this work she developed a particular interest in the cultivation and use of Persicaria tinctoria. Anna recently moved full-time to Taystay'ich (Denman Island) where she is beginning to build relationships with the plants and colours of this beautiful island.
Anna holds an MFA degree from NSCAD University, a BFA degree from Emily Carr University and a diploma in Fibre Arts from Kootenay School of the Arts. In support of her work and research, Anna has received grants from the BC Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, Nova Scotia Museum and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
