Winter Homecoming

This class provides an introduction to thread painting using a free motion foot. In this one day class it is possible to complete a winter scene with the skills you will learn. We will review thread, needle and tension to produce the dirt wind rows. We will do a little piece of foiling for the chrome of the car. Machine appliqué will be practiced as well.

List of materials
1. A sewing machine in good working order that is capable of free motion quilting. Please read your manual and try out the actual set up on your machine, practice on a small quilt sandwich using a 8in. Square of cotton for the top, an 8 inch square of 80/20 batting and another 8inch square of cotton backing. Be sure before class, please!
2. Free motion foot that fits your machine
3. A regular sewing foot
4. Your machine manual
5. 90/14 topstitch or universal needle for your machine
6. A pair of sharp ended paper scissors and a pair of sharp ended sewing scissors
7. Steam a seam lite 2 sheets 8 1/2in by 11in. Or an equivalent length
8. 1 small piece of chrome coloured shiny foil, 3 by 5in
9. 1 piece of parchment paper for pressing 12 by 14in
10. 1 piece of Heavy Duty Tearaway Stabilizer 13 by 15in, you may choose to stitch with a hoop instead
11. 1 piece each of backing fabric, colour of your choice, and 80/20hobbs or warm and natural batting, 16in by 16in
12. 1 piece of sparkly white fine tulle like wedding veil tulle, but with silver sparkles 13x15
13. 1 piece blue sky fabric, 7in long by 15in wide, I like hand dyes for this or equivalent
14. 1 piece of plain white fabric for the snow ground,13 by15in
15. Brown fabric suitable for the tree, 8 1/2in wide by 15in long
16. 1 piece brown for the house 2 1/2in by 2 ½ in scrap
17. 1 piece of scrap cotton fabric for the car, colour of choice, I used blue, 4in by 4in.
18. 1 piece of scrap of black for tires and people silhouettes, 3in by 3in.
19. I piece of red scrap for taillights, 2in by 2in.
20. Small scrap of med/light blue batik for snow accents, optional, I used acrylic paints in this colour instead along with a med sandy colour to tone down the brightness of the snow
21. Pre-wound bobbins in white, variegated brown, variegated green, black, and grey
22. 50 weight cotton thread or cotton/poly in white for snow, variegated green for trees, variegated browns for the dirt, brown to match tree fabric, black for birds, red, clear or silver, and colour to match your car colour, 1 pale gold, 1 med gold and 1 dark gold for grasses, blue for sky.
